Next week is National Picnic Week (17th-23rd June) and Higgidy have launched a limited edition Balsamic Onion and Mature Cheddar Quiche. I was sent some vouchers from Higgidy's PR company so that I was able to try this quiche for a review and I found it in Sainsbury's priced at £3.79 but they are also available in other supermarkets.
Higgidy freshly bake their pies by hand to give them a homemade feel. Their main ingredients are British and all their chicken and pork is Freedom Food Certified. Their eggs are always free range.
The pastry on this Balsamic Onion and Mature Cheddar Quiche is all-butter seeded shortcrust pastry and the filling is a balsamic onion chutney with mature cheddar and then topped with a crispy onion and mature cheddar crumb.
You can eat this quiche straight from the box or reheat it. To reheat only takes 25 minutes so I decided to try it this way and my house was filled with the most amazing smells whilst it was in the oven! It was slightly browner and crispier on top once heated and I served with a nice big salad. One third of the quiche contains 385 calories.
The pastry is lovely and crisp and it does indeed taste buttery. The crumb on the top is nice and crunchy and really cheesy. I really enjoyed the filling which is also very cheesy and the balsamic onion chutney is quite sweet with a nice tang to it...delicious!
I took some of the left over quiche with me for lunch today and I can confirm that it is also very tasty cold. Ideal for picnics!
Verdict I loved Higgidy's Balsamic Onion and Mature Cheddar Quiche, it certainly had a homemade feel to it and I loved the texture and the combination of flavours. I usually make my own quiches but I would be seriously tempted to buy a Higgidy one in future.
