Mr Review Addict picked up these Toffee Fudge Belgian Chocolate Hot Cross Buns in M&S last night. He only spotted them on the way to the till so we nearly missed out! Packs of 4 are 2 for £2.50 and each 68g bun contains 207 calories. They also also suitable for vegetarians.
I don't like normal hot cross buns, I don't know why because I like all of the ingredients but something just doesn't sit right with me. I do however like chocolate hot cross buns and I particually enjoyed the Tesco Double Chocolate version that I tried recently (reviewed by Grocery Gems here).
If you saw my tweet last night you will know that I was quite shocked at the price of the cherries in M&S (£8!) but I can't deny that they do some very tasty food! My favorite at the moment is their pikelets so obviously I had high hopes for these hot cross buns.
I like my hot cross buns toasted but I find that they key with chocolate versions is just lightly do them, especially if you are using a toaster rather than a grill because otherwise you will end up with a melted chocolate mess.
The texture was perfect, they were light and buttery with a slight toffee flavor to them. There was plenty of dark Belgian chocolate pieces scattered throughout with a lovely sweetness from the fudge pieces. The spicy flavor that you usually get with a hot cross bun was still there but it was much more subtle which worked really well with the chocolate.
Verdict
We both loved these Marks & Spencers Toffee Fudge Belgian Chocolate Hot Cross Buns, they were a fantastic alternative to currant based buns and were particually nice with a thin layer of chocolate spread!
