I've been hearing lots about Popchips and I'veseen lots of reviews where everyone seems to rave about them so I thought I had better get in on the action and see what all the fuss is about. Popchips come in quite a few flavours but I decided to go with BBQ.
Popchips are from California and are not fried or baked but as the name suggests they are popped, like popcorn. Apparently they have less than half the fat of fried crisps.
I don't really understand how you pop a potato, I mean can I do this myself in the microwave? Probably not and the video on the Popchips Website doesn't give much way so I will just assume that they use some kind of wizardry.
Popchips are a disc shaped crisp and almost reminded me of prawn crackers but perhaps a little smaller. I purchased them in Sainsbury's for £2 for an 85g bag. The suggested serving size is 23g which is about 18 crisps and this serving is 96 calories (about 5 syns for Slimming World followers). I am not sure why they wouldn't just make the bag 92g so that there were 4 servings in a bag, it seems a bit random.
Anyway the BBQ flavor is really nice, it is quite strong and I was surprised at the texture of the Popchips and how crunchy they were. I think as they look like prawn crackers I was expecting something similar to the texture of a prawn cracker but they are much crispier.
Verdict Quite often low-fat or "healthier" snacks are just rubbish in taste and texture (I mean who honestly likes baked crisps?) but Popchips are actually really nice and I would definitely buy them again and also try the other flavours. My only complaint is that they are not as satisfying as some delicious hand cooked fried crisps but for a healthier version of crisps you can't really go wrong.
