I was approached and asked if I would like to review Special Spoons by Royal VKB. I was curious as to what makes these spoons so special so I agreed and these arrived in the post the other day.
Special Spoons are designed to be those very useful spoons that are missing from your cutlery draw. They are meant to be for things like jams, pickles and sauces and included is a pickle fork, an olive spoon, jam spoon, toast spreader and a spicy spoon. They come in 4 colours; anthracite, fuchsia, ochre and red and cost €9,95 which I make around £8.22.
They came presented in a plastic set and you have to cut them out of the frame with some scissors or by twisting them free. I liked the look of this in the packet but I thought that it was a bit of a strange idea and I don't quite get why this makes them a "real must have" as the website says. I found that twisting the spoons worked better than cutting with scissors as it was quite hard to get close to the spoon and so I was left with some sharp edges.
I can't say that I have ever had a need for any of these spoons and I am still not entirely sure what a spicy spoon is but I do like the toast spreader and the pickle fork and see myself using these a lot and I would probably use the olive spoon for those smaller pickled onions.
The packet doesn't say whether the spoons are dishwasher proof but I would assume being plastic that they are.
Verdict
I liked the idea of special spoons but I am not keen on the plastic frame idea because of the sharp edges that were left. I also have to say that I think £8.22 is rather pricey for some plastic spoons that are not particularly attractive looking. That said I do think that they are useful to have, and will use them so I think that 3 stars is a fair rating.
