Tesco Finest Red Onion, Whisky and Chilli Chutney is another fantastic new product from the Tesco Finest range that I was sent to review. It comes in a very nice 190g glass jar which costs £3.89 and 100g contains 250 calories.
This chutney is made from British red onions, single malt Scotch whisky and balsamic vinegar of Modena. It is slowly cooked in open pans with British sugar and the preserving experts still use the same traditional methods as they did when they started 30 years ago. It also contains all natural ingredients.
It smelt deliciously sweet and I could definitely detect a whiff of whisky. The texture was almost jelly like with some large slithers of onion and I served it on top of a bagel and melted cheese. It tasted pretty amazing to be honest; the onion is sweet but there is a tanginess from the balsamic and the whisky and then followed a very slight heat from the chilli.
Verdict
This is easily one of the best shop-bought chutneys that I have tasted, the combination of flavours was delicious and this will be a regular addition to my shopping basket!
