I have been ridiculously excited about reviewing this Red Velvet cake which is another one of the new products that I have been lucky enough to try from the new Tesco Finest range. As I mentioned in my previous reviews, I was sent some vouchers to try some of the new bakery products and it was a complete no brainer for me to purchase this cake. It has obviously been quite popular as it took me a while to find a store where they hadn't sold out, but here she is in all her glory!
I have to admit that I have never actually tried a red velvet cake before but I have always wanted to. It's not something that I have seen much of in the UK and it's great to see some more unusual products in the Finest range.
This American classic has 3 layers of red sponge with a white cream cheese frosting and costs £10.00. It is hand decorated and finished with a red crumb. It is quite the beast, it serves 14 with a serving containing 315 calories.
I think you will agree that this cake looks simply stunning! The red sponge looks fantastic against the white frosting and it certainly tastes as good at looks!
The sponge is soft and moist and has a hint of chocolate to it. The cream cheese frosting in-between the sponges is amazing, it has a slight tanginess to it which against the sweet sponge is just a match made in heaven. The outside frosting is a stiffer texture but it melts in your mouth and is equally delicious with the bright red crumb finishing it off nicely.
Each of the products in the Finest range has a story behind it and some of these can be found on the Tesco Finest website. This cake also has a little bar-code on the box which if you scan it with a smart phone, it takes you straight to the page where you can learn more about the story behind the cake. I love this idea and you can really see that at lot of care has gone into decorating it.
VerdictTesco Finest Red Velvet cake was amazing and I am now going to be looking for an excuse to buy another one. I think this would make a fantastic alternative Christmas cake! I mean who actually likes fruit cake anyway and the red color definitely has a festive feel to it.
