Tesco has recently released a new range of retro style cakes based on sweet shop favourites such as Kola Cubes, Pear Drops and Rhubarb and Custard to name a few. Tesco's PR company very kindly sent me these very pretty Rhubarb and Custard Cupcakes to review but I have seen some of the rest of the range in stores and they all look fantastic. I particularly like the look of the Giant Chocolate Sundae Cupcake (who wouldn't?) and there is a Choc and Coconut Footlong cake which I haven't seen but I REALLY want to try.Rhubarb and Custards have always been a childhood favorite of mine which is a bit odd as I don't like custard or rhubarb but I could never get enough of the yellow and red boiled sweets. These cupcakes certainly do remind me of those sweets with their bright yellow custard flavor icing and the bright red sugar topping. They come in a 4 pack and are priced at £2. Each cake contains 280 calories.
The cakes actually smell like Rhubarb and Custard Sweets! The vanilla sponge is delicious, it is really light, airy and moist and hidden in the center is a rhubarb sauce. I think rhubarb is quite an acquired taste as it can be quite sharp but I need not have worried because this sauce is very sweet with just a slight tang, a bit like a jam and was actually very nice. The best bit however was the icing which comes as no surprise as I am sure everyone's favorite bit of a cupcake is the icing. It was a generous amount and had a nice sweet vanilla custard flavor to it. The red sugar was a nice touch adding a bit of crunch like some crushed up boiled sweets!
Verdict These are very well put together little cupcakes and the Sweet Shop Favourites range is sure to be popular. I can't wait to try some more!
