The Aging of the Pug
A few days ago we walked in the house after being away for a few hours, only to be welcomed to a smell unfamiliar to us.
"What is that?" My husband asked as he wrinkled his nose.
As I called out for Chatito, my husband looked around the house to try and find where the smell was coming from.
Chatito seemed to be hiding but we couldn't figure out why: Was he sick?  Did he hurt himself again?
And that smell - where was it coming from?
After a once over and turning on all the lights we looked towards our balcony to open our glass doors.  It was then that we saw where the stain was coming from: a fresh urine stain on our brand new curtains.
A urine stain.
Chatito, obviously embarrassed and maybe relieved that he could now go outside, was cautiously following us around as we took the curtain down.
My husband, obviously upset, raised his voice in frustration...our brand new curtains were ruined!
Me, on the other hand, looked lovingly at Chatito's gray face.  My baby is getting old.
From his arthritis, to his recent cancer diagnosis, to now incontinence, Chatito is no longer the pug we could leave at home for hours without a potty break.
Just as adjustments were made when my brother brought Chatito home for the first time, it's time that I also make changes in his care as he gets older.
Step one:  Adjust our schedules to include more potty breaks for Chatito.
Step two: Get new curtains.
