Have you seen these signs, pictures of sorts, that you are ideally, displaying on your wall or re-sharing on Facebook?
They all seem to have words of wisdom, nuggets of inspiration, and truisms that all of us can apply to our daily life. Or, can we?
In a recent interaction with a friend on Facebook, I noticed that he posted this "sign" on his wall. He is (seemingly) happily married, travels all-over the world, lives in a McMansion and is, according to all his Facebook updates and commentary, "happy with his life."
He notes that this is the way he "chooses to live his life." But, in my point of view, he has the option of living his life under his own terms because he is college educated, and has a a corporate two-income household, for a two-person home.
Sure this sign applies to him, as it applies to me - because we have options that many other's don't have.
But when I made that point to open his eyes, there seemed to be a disconnect. Which leads me to believe that we, as in the community at large, sometimes also have that disconnect.
Let's just pick at the fifth line from this beautiful sign: "If you don't like your job, quit."
Really? How many people can actually afford to quit their job?
Or how about this one: "Travel often."
Although I am bitching and complaining that I haven't traveled for fun and relaxation since October of last year, I have met plenty of people that haven't taken a single day off in two, possibly three years.
They happen to be stuck working, at that job that they don't like - because they can't afford to quit.
Deep inside I want to believe this sign, and signs like this. But the reality is, not everyone has the opportunity to make the choices that some of us can.
It's to them that I dedicate this blog post...and apologize for making assumptions about their life.
May the universe equally give us all the opportunity to live the life we want to live...but most importantly, to have a little empathy for those that don't have choices and understanding for those that do.
